How to Tie a Non-Slip Loop for Streamers

A streamer can lose its action—or your knot can fail—when the loop is tied at the wrong size. I’ll show you how to tie a reliable non-slip loop and adjust it for movement, strength, and fewer snags.

The non-slip loop is useful when you want a streamer to pivot instead of being held rigidly to the leader. That extra freedom can improve how a fly swims, kicks, or turns, but the loop also creates another detail to manage: size.

Tie it too small and the streamer may behave much like it would on a standard knot. Tie it too large and the loop can catch weeds, collect debris, or become awkward around the hook eye. The goal is a controlled loop that suits the fly, current, and cover you’re fishing.

What the non-slip loop does

A non-slip loop—often called a Kreh loop—uses a fixed loop at the end of the leader. The loop doesn’t depend on the knot sliding open during the cast or retrieve. Instead, the leader passes through a compact overhand knot and wraps around itself before being secured.

That arrangement gives the streamer a hinge at the connection. A baitfish pattern can turn more freely, a weighted streamer can swing slightly on the pause, and a fly with a wide head or articulated body is less likely to be pulled into a perfectly straight alignment.

The loop doesn’t automatically make every streamer more effective. Some flies are designed to track straight, and a large loop can make an already lively pattern feel loose or inconsistent. Treat loop size as a tuning adjustment rather than a universal upgrade.

Materials and preparation

You’ll need:

  • A leader or tippet with enough tag end for several wraps
  • The streamer’s hook eye
  • Nippers or another safe way to trim the tag end
  • Water or saliva to lubricate the knot before tightening

Monofilament is usually forgiving and easy to cinch. Fluorocarbon can also work, but its stiffness and surface characteristics vary by brand and diameter. Some stiff or slick materials need extra care when seating the knot. If you’re using an unfamiliar leader material, test the finished connection with firm hand pressure before casting a valuable streamer.

Inspect the hook eye first. Paint, burrs, weld points, or a partially closed eye can damage the leader and make a sound knot appear to be the problem. Run your fingers along the final section of leader as well; nicks and flattened spots are good reasons to cut back and retie.

How to tie the non-slip loop

The steps below assume you’re tying directly to the streamer’s hook eye.

1. Leave a useful tag end

Cut or position the leader so you have roughly 8 to 10 inches of tag end beyond the point where the loop will eventually sit. You can use less once you’re experienced, but extra material makes the wraps easier to control and gives you room to correct a mistake.

2. Tie a loose overhand knot

Form an overhand knot in the tag end, but don’t tighten it. Leave the knot open enough that the tag can pass through it again later.

At this stage, the overhand knot determines where the finished loop will begin. Its distance from the hook eye will become the approximate length of the loop.

3. Pass the tag through the hook eye

Put the tag end through the hook eye and pull it back toward the overhand knot. If the eye is large enough, passing the tag through twice can provide additional security, but the basic loop works with a single pass.

Bring the tag back through the overhand knot from the same side it originally exited. Keep the overhand knot loose. You should now have a loop between the hook eye and that knot.

4. Wrap the tag around the standing line

Hold the loop near the hook eye so it doesn’t change size. Wrap the tag end around the standing line—the section leading back to your rod—three to five times.

Use fewer wraps with a larger, softer monofilament and more wraps with a thinner or slicker material. Four wraps are a sensible starting point for many streamer leaders. The wraps should lie neatly beside one another rather than crossing into a small tangle.

5. Return the tag through the overhand knot

Pass the tag end back through the overhand knot from the same direction it exited before the wraps. This directional detail matters. If the tag comes through the opposite side, the knot may not load correctly and can be more prone to slipping or distorting.

6. Lubricate and seat the knot

Moisten the knot. Then pull the tag end slowly to draw the wraps snug around the standing line. Keep the loop at your intended size while the knot begins to tighten.

Once the wraps are neat, pull the standing line and the tag end together to seat the knot firmly. The overhand knot should close against the wraps, while the loop remains open between the knot and the hook eye.

Trim the tag end close, leaving a small safety stub. Don’t cut it flush with the knot. A short tag makes it easier to see whether the knot has begun to slip.

Choosing the right loop size

Loop size affects more than appearance. It changes how much freedom the streamer has, how much material can catch cover, and how much movement the connection must absorb.

Small loops: control and fewer snags

A small loop—roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch inside diameter for many streamers—keeps the fly close to the leader. It’s a useful starting point in heavy cover, around submerged branches, or when you want the pattern to track predictably.

Small loops are less likely to catch grass and floating debris. They also reduce the amount of loose connection that can swing into a hook point or wrap around the streamer during a cast. The trade-off is reduced freedom. A bulky or articulated streamer may not pivot as readily.

Medium loops: a versatile starting point

A loop around 1/4 to 3/8 inch often gives a streamer noticeable movement without becoming excessively loose. This size can suit unweighted baitfish patterns, moderate current, and retrieves that include pauses or short strips.

Use the fly as your guide. If the hook eye is large and the streamer has a broad head, a very small loop may be nearly closed by the connection itself. If the fly is compact and sparse, a medium loop may provide more movement than you need.

Large loops: maximum freedom, more exposure

A larger loop can help an articulated or heavily dressed streamer swing and pivot. It may also be useful when fishing a fly that needs to turn over freely rather than track like a small nymph.

The disadvantages become more obvious as the loop grows. A large loop can catch vegetation, snag on the fly during a poor cast, or make the streamer feel less precise in fast water. It can also expose the leader to more rubbing around rocks and branches because the connection has more room to move.

A larger loop doesn’t necessarily make the knot stronger. Strength depends on the leader material, diameter, knot quality, hook eye, and how smoothly the knot was seated. Size is primarily a movement and snag-management decision.

Adjusting the loop without starting over

If you notice the loop is too large before fully seating the knot, hold the streamer and slide the overhand knot closer to the hook eye. If you want more freedom, move it farther away. Do this before tightening the wraps completely.

Once the knot is fully seated, don’t try to force a major size change by pulling on one part of it. That can distort the wraps or damage the leader. Cut it off and retie when the loop is clearly wrong.

Small adjustments are usually more useful than dramatic ones. Change the size slightly, then watch the streamer in clear water or beside the bank. You’re looking for controlled pivoting, not constant flopping.

Troubleshooting a failed or awkward loop

The knot slips when you pull it tight

Common causes include too few wraps, an incompletely closed overhand knot, or a slick leader material that needs more careful seating. Retie with one additional wrap, keep the wraps aligned, and lubricate before applying pressure.

Also check that the tag passed through the overhand knot in the correct direction both times. A reversed pass can leave the knot looking close to correct while loading unevenly.

The knot breaks near the hook eye

Inspect the eye and the leader above the knot. A burr, sharp edge, or damaged section of leader can cut into the material. If the break occurs repeatedly with a clean eye, try a fresh section of leader and avoid cinching the knot dry or abruptly.

The loop itself may not be responsible. A connection can fail at the eye, within the wraps, or farther up the leader.

The streamer spins or tangles

First, reduce the loop size. A large loop can let a streamer roll into the leader, especially during a fast strip, sudden pause, or poorly controlled cast. Check whether the streamer is balanced and whether its materials are fouling the hook point.

If the problem continues, try a smaller loop and a slower retrieve. Some flies are simply prone to twisting, particularly when they have a broad profile or unevenly distributed materials.

The streamer feels too stiff

Increase the loop slightly, assuming you have enough room around the fly and aren’t fishing dense cover. A larger opening can free the hook eye and let the streamer pivot. Make the change gradually; doubling the loop size is rarely necessary.

The loop looks uneven

Uneven wraps usually mean the tag was pulled sideways or the standing line wasn’t held under steady tension. Cut and retie if the wraps cross, bunch, or leave visible gaps. A neat knot is easier to inspect and more likely to load consistently.

Check the connection before the next cast: Pull the standing line and the streamer firmly by hand, inspect the tag stub, and retie immediately if the knot shifts, the leader shows abrasion, or the loop has changed size.

Practical choices on the water

Use a smaller loop when cover, debris, or accuracy is the main concern. Choose a medium loop when you want a balanced starting point for movement and control. Go larger only when the streamer’s design benefits from extra pivoting and the surrounding water is open enough to tolerate it.

After tying, test the fly close to shore. Watch it during a slow strip, a pause, and a change of direction. Those three moments reveal whether the loop is giving useful movement or simply allowing the streamer to wander.

Before fishing, run through this short checklist:

  • Is the hook eye clean and free of sharp edges?
  • Are the wraps neat, snug, and correctly aligned?
  • Did you leave a small tag stub?
  • Does the loop match the cover and the streamer’s design?
  • Has the connection passed a firm hand-pull test?

Retie whenever the leader is nicked, the knot has rubbed against rocks, or the loop no longer holds its intended size. A few extra seconds at the bank is cheaper than watching a streamer disappear after a hard take.
